So what culture does the US have on its own? If it’s a melting pot of so many societies, shouldn’t it be allowed to take over aspects and use those things for itself?
Of course not. What touches and gets absorbed into America’s porous borders is destroyed from what it formerly was and reshaped into a mockery, a shadow of its former self. Native American headdresses are often great importance, earned through war and respect. Yet white women will parade them around as the next ‘hipster’ fashion, since it’s ironic because they’re white and not Native!
Or worse yet, the turquoise fad that has seemingly overtaken the States. Jewelry modeled off of Native American or Egyptian styles is the rage now. I fail to see how people can consider themselves the same as ancient royalty with their self-centeredness and possibly the furthest from being altruistic leaders.
Does America have its own cultures born within its borders? Yes, but they need to stay there. I’m sure countless people have heard of YOLO, ICP, and such similar fads and groups. “You Only Live Once”, a ‘life motto’ of incredible selfishness to do whatever you want while you’re living is mass-marketed towards teenagers. Insane Clown Posse, a (if you can call it even music) rap group from Michigan who paints their faces. Their music is degenerate garbage that is offensive to pretty much any group, and their followers are even worse. They call themselves Juggalos, and pride themselves on being illiterate, uneducated, violent, drug-addicted people, who they themselves are often covered in clown-face tattoos.
Let us not forget the gangster culture as well. Originating in America, it has been ’cool’ for many youths to not only not get an education, but to fight against mainstream society in any way they can and live a life of crime not out of necessity but by refusing to obey society’s laws. Much of America’s popular culture is defined by crime, and this is nothing recent. From sabotaging the British, to the Western-mania of cowboys stealing from the Natives, and failing that, from each other with increasingly daring stunts and robberies, to the mobster era of the the early 1900’s.
Because of America’s origins in the first place, its Puritan roots still take hold of many things today. America is a sex-negative, slut shaming society, where if a woman wants to walk around topless she must fight for that right in court, and where even afterwards faces ridicule. Even now, there’s ongoing fights from the “traditionalist” culture to ban abortion clinics from boards of white men in charge.
In short, America can produce nothing good, all the while destroying all that comes within it. It is the definition of appropriation.
