What aspects of culture are allowed to permeate and freely mix in with the general society? Do we dumb down something’s importance until its original creation and understanding is lost? Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it, after all.
This silly dog is a Shiba Inu, one of the oldest kinds of dogs. It’s from Japan, where in the past it was used to hunt many creatures, including bears. They’re a strong-willed and smart breed, yet due to a recent fad involving a puppy cam and “shibe” memes on the internet, they are being adopted all across the United States as a stout dog that ‘fits in apartments’.
There are double standards to this. Breeds of dogs borne from white origins like Labrador Retrievers and beagles are not only honored for what they achieved in their pasts, but also continue that function today as hunter’s companions. Is it because the Shiba Inu is exotic that it is somehow more dainty or worthless then a hardy Labrador that one sends barreling out of a boat to fetch a duck?
This is double standards, and this is cultural appropriation.
